Quarantine Binge-Listen: 40 Metal Albums with No Bad Songs

Train of Thought (2003) – DREAM THEATER

Train of Thought is not necessarily considered the best DREAM THEATER album, but it is their heaviest and my personal favorite. 5 of the 7 tracks here are over 10-minutes long and each is an example of great music composition. You might consider this ‘thinking man’s metal’, but any metal fan can appreciate this record.

Genre: Progressive Metal

Mezmerize (2005) – SYSTEM OF A DOWN

Mezmerize is my personal favorite SOAD album. It didn’t receive the same level of buzz as Toxicity but I argue Mezmerize matches it in song-writing and enthusiasm. The album is endlessly entertaining from the first song to the last.

Genre: Alternative Metal

Shogun (2008) – TRIVIUM

TRIVIUM has been cursed with a lot of unjust criticism in their careers and many ups and downs have come with it. That said, most fans and critics agree that Shogun is a challenging, ambitious, and all-around impressive effort. Many even agree this is the best TRIVIUM album. The record is consistent throughout and showcases dynamic song-writing and musicianship. It is worth multiple listens!

Genre: Thrash Metal/Hardcore

The Dream Calls for Blood (2013) – DEATH ANGEL

The first time DEATH ANGEL cracked the Top 100 on the American charts was with 2013’s The Dream Calls for Blood. The album also received critical acclaim upon it’s released but is still an oft-forgotten album. It is pure thrash metal and is an essential record to own if you are a fan of the thrash genre.

Genre: Thrash Metal

Meliora (2015) – GHOST

GHOST’s third studio album put them in the media spotlight and at the forefront of metal’s next generation of bands. The record kicked-off GHOST’s rise in popularity and is now one of the biggest bands out there. The sound is a little more Sabbath-like metal and progressive rock, but what it lacks in heaviness it makes up for in innovation and interesting song-writing.

Genre: Alternative Metal, Hard Rock

Nightmare Logic (2017) – POWER TRIP

Its difficult to put into words but POWER TRIP has the ‘IT’ factor. There is something about their sound that makes them standout from other young metal bands. The group’s second album is a perfect example of why we profiled POWER TRIP as a ‘Band You Should Know’. The record is genuine thrash with a splash of punk and was listed on numerous ‘best albums’ lists upon it’s release.

Genre: Crossover Thrash
