New This Week – July 24, 2020

Here are 3 things metal-related that captured my attention this week…Maybe they’ll capture yours as well!

New SHRAPNEL Music Video

UK thrash act SHRAPNEL released their third full-length album Palace For The Insane back in May and this week released their official music video for “Begin Again”. The video was animated and directed by Costin Chioreanu. The song is great, and the video is amazing!

New Music from Tim “Ripper” Owens

This came out of nowhere for me, but this week I found out that ECHOSOUL, a progressive metal collaboration, had released a 7-track EP earlier this year. 2 of the tracks are sung by none other than Tim “Ripper” Owens, previously of JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH, and BEYOND FEAR.

Recent Listening – Firepower by JUDAS PRIEST

I’ve been on a bit of a Rob Halford kick the past week (both JUDAS PRIEST and his solo stuff). I finally got around to listening to JUDAS PRIEST’s Firepower (2018) album and have five thoughts to share:

  • My favorite JUDAS PRIEST album is Painkiller. There are a lot of elements in Firepower that feel like it could have been called Painkiller – Part II
  • Rob Halford doesn’t have the high-end vocal range he once did, but still has a strong set of pipes. If you go into the album with that understanding, you will not be disappointed by his performance
  • I think it’s safe to say Firepower is the best JUDAS PRIEST album since Rob Halford returned to the band in 2003
  • While they could have probably cut out of few of the 14 tracks, most are strong if not great.
  • 50 years into the band’s existence and they are still creating quality metal. That is a testament to the band’s talent, drive, and energy!
