ICED EARTH – Top 25 Songs

5. “I Died For You

The Dark Saga (1996)

“I Died For You” is the ICED EARTH version of a slow-song. The track showcases Matt Barlow’s ability to project emotion in his vocals. The chorus picks up a bit and gives the song some groove metal roots but the track remains controlled and even-handed from start to finish.

4. “Brainwashed

Burnt Offerings (1995)

“Brainwashed” is the most underrated ICED EARTH song. I don’t often hear about this track and it is rarely listed as a fan-favorite. The song is complex and is one of Matt Barlow’s strongest vocal performances -which says a lot considering his track record of having strong vocals.

3. “Stand Alone

Something Wicked This Way Comes (1998)

This is a perfect metal song. At 2 minutes 44 seconds, there is no time for filler here. “Stand Alone” is to ICED EARTH as “Walk” is to PANTERA.

2. “The Hunter

The Dark Saga (1996)

“The Hunter” combines all of ICED EARTH’s best elements and presses them into one song. It’s fast, melodic, heavy and layered. The performances are top notch and it’s arguably the best vocal performance Matt Barlow has ever laid down. It’s also difficult to imagine the song being composed or arranged any better.

1. “Dante’s Inferno

Burnt Offerings (1995)

This is more than just a song. This is a journey. “Dante’s Inferno” is brilliantly composed, epic and an absolute masterpiece. Think of IRON MAIDEN’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” only more dynamic and atmospheric from start to finish. The song is based on the Divine Comedy, a 1320ad Italian poem. In it, we follow Dante as he travels through the nine circles of hell. It is the metal version of an orchestral symphony. “Dante’s Inferno” is the pinnacle of ICED EARTH and deserves to go down as one of the greatest metal performances in history.
