10 Metal Bands that Broke Up too Soon

AT THE GATES

Originally Active: 1990-1996

Number of Albums: 4

BIO:

AT THE GATES are one of the major forerunners of Gothenburg-style death metal, whose initial run saw them release four albums in four years. Their third (“Terminal Spirit Disease”) and fourth (Slaughter of the Soul”) albums put the band on the map. “Slaughter of the Soul”, in particular, received international attention and gained the band several US tours and a regular rotation on MTV. The album is even ranked eighth on Metal Injections list of Top 10 Influential Heavy Metal Albums.

Despite the rising success, Jonas and Anders Björler left the band in 1996, and AT THE GATES dissolved. It’s disappointing that we will never know what could have come from the huge momentum the band had generated just before their break-up (especially when you look at the success AT THE GATES has had since reuniting).

INITIAL ALBUMS:

“The Red Sky Is Ours” (1992)

“With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness” (1993)

“Terminal Spirit Disease” (1994)

“Slaughter of the Soul” (1995)

REUNIONS:

The band reunited briefly to play several festivals in 2008 (including Wacken Open Air and Graspop), and officially reunited in 2010. Their first album after getting back together was 2014s “At War with Reality” which won a Swedish Grammy for comeback album of the year. The band also won the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Inspiration Award in June 2015.

Since reuniting, the band have released three albums, including “The Nightmare of Being” which was released on July 2, 2021.
